About the event
The Elder tree (Sambucus canadensis) grows across Vermont, in wet gulches, marking old farmsteads, gracing the edges of forests, yards and roads. Humans and other animals have been harvesting flowers and berries from the elder tree for thousands of years of medicine making. Join us in learning how to identify the elder tree, making Elderberry syrup, enjoying the open air, and giving appreciation for the harvest. Elderberry syrup is useful at the onset of the flu, or common cold, and has been shown to decrease the duration and symptoms of normal colds and flus. You will learn how to make your own syrup at home, and we will discuss the properties and lore of the elder tree.
